Protected Natural Area
Flor de Sal d’Es Trenc is produced in the protected natural area of Es Trenc and Salobrar de Campos, which features the largest un-developed beach in Mallorca, plus a dune system and a vitally important wetland which is also home to the salt production process.
Flor de Sal production has a crucial role to play in maintaining the environmental conditions of the wetland, which in their turn support a large bird population. Salobrar de Campos is home to flourishing colonies of bird species of great interest to ornithologists, such as the avocet, black-winged stilt, common shelduck, snowy plover, and flamingo.
The extraordinary environmental value of this natural area is enshrined in various protection measures, among them Natural Area of Special Interest, Special Conservation Zone, and Special Bird Protection Zone. It also forms part of the EU Natura 2000 network.
Local pressure group GOB (to give it its full name, the Balearic Ornithological and Natural Defence Group), the islands’ major environmental organization, works with Flor de Sal d’Es Trenc in research, conservation and biodiversityprojects in Salobrar de Campos.
